Paper Dolls

  • The Tricycle Theatre, London, 2013

Paper Dolls premiered at The Tricycle Theatre in February 2013. Written by Philip Himberg and directed by Indu Rubasingham. It was adapted from the documentary by Tomer Heymann and explores the fascinating and often bizarre contradictions of a group of Filipino care workers in Israel who perform a drag act at night.

The wild mix of song, dance, politics, culture and real life drama was a warmly received sell out at The Tricycle. It’s documentary origins are reflected in the use of a live hand held camera that further exposes to the audience some of the inner turmoil and experiences of the double life. The projection design also included projection mapping to Richard Kent’s brutalist Tel Aviv set architecture and Hebrew text animations.

'it has a generosity of spirit that proves raucously beguiling.'
Michael Billington, The Guardian
