After 21 years The Death of Klinghoffer get’s it London premier at ENO.
The team felt the music was a meditation on the issues surrounding Israel and Palestine, not a divisive attempt to take sides in the debate. They built a world of solid concrete, taking our lead from the west bank wall and sandy desert, using video to bring the world of the Achille Lauro, the ship that was hijacked to the stage and to transform the concrete to the watery poetry of the ocean and the vast expanses of desert inherent in the music.
The team spent several days filming on a ship of the coast of Gran Canaria with three cameras, 1 for each wall in the set, shooting in sync to bring a vast ocean scape to the stage. They also filmed in the mountainous desert in the centre of the island to get some interesting landscapes.
