Where The Wild Things Are

Where The Wild Things Are, the 1980 children’s opera by Knussen and Sendak, based on Sendak’s book, opened in a new production for Bremer Oper in 2012.
The production envisaged the Wild Things as grotesque buy friendly grown-ups, in a worls of paper, drawings and imagination. The piece played with shadow puppetry and illustration, and this was carried into the video design, which was entirely hand-drawn on site in stark black pen, or doctored from shadowplay footage.
All the journeys in the play, to and from the land of the Wild Things, were to animated video accompaniment on the four walls of Max’s spinning bedroom, controlled by a Wings Platinum system.
